How to Remove Car Odor Like a Pro

Remove Car Odor as If You Got a Full Service Car Wash

Car odor can accumulate over time, especially if you have kids and pets. The more your kids make a mess and your pets shed hair in your car, the more the odor increases. This is to be expected, but do not worry, because it is not the end of the world. If your car has horrible odor, all you have to do is clean it as if you went to a full service car wash. Of course, it is still recommended that you go to a full service car wash; however, if you are feeling up to the task, you will need to follow our easy guidelines below in order to have the freshest-smelling car in the neighborhood:

Wash and Clean Your Car

Obviously, you should start out by washing and cleaning your car. Start by rinsing dirt, like mud, bugs, and bird droppings, off your car’s exterior. Then, using a clean microfiber cloth and a high-quality car cleaner, soap up the car, getting all the dirty areas including underneath the windshield wipers. Be sure that you use a good car cleaner and a microfiber cloth, not a regular at-home detergent and sponge, since the former are the safest tools and products to use on cars. Next, rinse and dry the car.

Once that is done, clean any clutter inside the car. Remove trash thrown about. Shake the mats outside the car and vacuum the seats, carpets, and mats. Then, be sure to use a high quality car glass cleaning product (not Windex or anything with ammonia) to clean the glass from the inside. The reason for cleaning the glass is that odor can sometimes get trapped on it. Next, wipe the dashboard, steering wheel, and the radio/AC area with a clean, wet cloth to remove dust buildup. Make sure the cloth is damp but not dripping with water.

Now, you can get started on the really messy areas. Using a car interior cleaning brush, loosen the tough-to-remove dirt by brushing the carpets, mats, and seats. Then, vacuum the upholstery again.

When the dirt is out, get a clean damp towel and a clean, soapy sponge and gently scrub the upholstery. You will want to clean them and then rinse the soap with the damp towel. After you finish, leave the windows down and let the car air dry so that mold and mildew do not ensue.

Scrub the Trunk and Vacuum

You will want to repeat the steps you took to clean your car’s upholstery on your car’s trunk. So be sure to scrub the trunk, vacuum it, and then clean it with a clean soapy sponge and a clean damp towel.

Place an Air Freshener

You can now place an air freshener in the car to keep the car smelling clean.

These are the steps taken to remove odor from your car when you go to a full service car wash, and if you follow them, you will eliminate car odor for good. Never again would you sit inside a smelly car.
